"Shane Dawson isn’t hateful"
It’s easy to forget that even racists and homophobes and sexists are human. It’s easy to forget that having warped ideas about gender or ‘political correctness’ is SUPER EASY TO SLIP INTO, no matter how…
I think it’s more complicated than this. I don’t follow Laci, but I hope she responds to SD the way she originally responded to Sam Pepper in her ‘open letter.’
SD’s apology video was inadequate, yes. But that’s not because there’s no way to apologize for his actions. It was inadequate because he apologized for “offending” specific people, when being “offensive” is not the problem. All comedy can be offensive to anyone.
The problem with some comedy is that it fits neatly in + encourages a culture that oppresses people, that reduces people to flatness and stereotypes and inhuman ideals, that moralistically enforces arbitrary social ideas.
SD’s tweets are not kind-hearted. That is true. They’re mean and rude and dismissive. That’s a human reaction to have when you’re called out for being a racist. That doesn’t excuse it. I’m not excusing the behavior, I’m just trying to explain it.
I don’t think treating Sam Pepper the way our community did will actually help people like him change. I want this community to be a safer place, but I also want people to make apology videos, not out of fear, but for the purpose of expanding themselves + the purview of their audiences.
This is one of the problems with SJW tumblr. It’s super simplistic, which is funny….until it’s serious. I fit in with the crowd until it’s time to get real and not just post funny GIF’s about hating men.
So check yourself. His behavior is inexcusable—yes. But let’s look at productive ways to inhibit the type of comedy that he finds permissible.
